MOVIE REVIEW

 Freedom Writers

A cinematic featurette exploring the diversity of students in Room 203 of Woodrow Wilson High takes us to the daunting reality of teachers' challenges and struggles inside the four walls of a classroom. The music, the dialogue, and the setting of Long Beach all made the film interesting and putting. Moreover. the intimate personal history of the Jews and Anne Franks's very own journal made the students realize that they could connect to something and someone. Based on the published book, Freedom Writers, the true and honest stories of young gang members and throw-away students go beyond what is expected of them with the admonishment of their English teacher, Miss G.

Termed as the classroom for young teenagers until they can drop out or be kicked out, the plot follows the story of a white teacher, Miss Gruwell, trying to make a difference in a room crammed with black, Latino, and Asian high school freshmen who promulgate racism as they believe that their own race is superior to the others. Defying endemic segregation in their city and school, Miss Gruwell rose above obstacles and effectuated a transformative educational experience where gang violence and racial discrimination are superseded with educational opportunity, equity, diversity, and inclusion. The student's similarities in music, movies, and of broken families and broken communities made them united and understood each other's differences. Students came to trust one another and they became storytellers in their own rights. Bearing from the afro music of several rap artists, Miss Gruwell, and her students came together to surmount racial animosity and be able to fully grasp the colossal consequences of racism from Long Beach to the Holocaust.

"I did what I had to do- that is all. Even a teenager can turn on the small light in the darkroom", as Anne Franks' savior has said, Miep Gies, every student of 203 is a hero. The everyday heroes fighting for their lives; a battle they have to face from sun up to sun down. The story tells not of a miracle but of hope. That at the end of it all, unfeigned effort and commitment will always count for everything.
